Alumnus wins International Moving Image Society ChEFF Award

Sam Brooks, a recent graduate from Ravensbourne’s BSc Broadcast Systems Technology course has won the International Moving Image Society (IMIS) Chief Engineers of Facilities Forum (ChEFF) Award.

Sam was awarded a £1,000 prize for an interface he designed which assists lighting designers in creating a wide variety of effects, giving them greater creative freedom. The compact, portable unit has an intuitive interface offering control manually, and using the DMX lighting control protocol – the industry standard method for managing lighting projects.

He was presented the award by David Spilsbury, Global Director of Technology, Moving Picture Company at the annual IMIS Awards at the Regent Street Cinema on Tuesday 19 February. This followed a visit from an IMIS representative to the Ravensbourne Degree Show last year, to assess BSc Digital Television Technology students' work.

Commenting, Sam said: “I am extremely humbled to be given an award for my project! I enjoyed every aspect of developing it and learned a lot through the process. The ChEFF Award focuses on sharing technical knowledge to create practical solutions to issues - I am really proud of the progress so far and hope to continue developing the project.”

David added: “The Ravensbourne projects were diverse and showed emerging engineering talent across a range of disciplines so it was a hard decision to select a winner. Sam was chosen as the 2018 recipient of the IMIS CHeFF Award as his methodology and practical solution to a tangible problem is what the CHeFF is all about. He created a purpose-built hardware interface that provided a cost-effective solution to delivering lighting for a TV quiz show.”
