Ravensbourne X London Fashion Week 2021

Mixed reality male model in fashion clothes

The only university invited to showcase at London Fashion Week 2021.

Ravensbourne students were invited by the British Fashion Council to showcase at London Fashion Week. The exclusive, invitation-only presentation saw students host a digital and physical fashion experience.

Students blended the innovative use of digital technology with traditional fashion craftsmanship for the show. They also produced a film that celebrated the entire class of 2021. The students worked shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the world's leading tech giants to explore a new world of mixed reality.

About Rave Digital

The presentation at London Fashion Week delved into the Rave Digital project.

In the summer of 2020, BA (Hons) Fashion and BA (Hons) Games Development students united to showcase their graduate collections via a slick, downloadable game which was streamed on Twitch.

The game, titled Rave Digital, attracted a thousand concurrent visitors in the first 3 hours and had a staggering 36,800 unique views within the first day!

The project made history as the first time that undergraduates had created their own avatars and digital outfits for a virtual fashion show. Students from the BA (Hons) Music & Sound Design, BA (Hons) Digital Television Production and BA (Hons) Digital Film Production courses have built upon this digital exploration with their own impressive show.

Digital Technology for Fashion Pathway

Rave Digital collaboration

Ravensbourne BA (Hons) Fashion and BA (Hons) Games Design students have united to showcase their designs on 3D avatars. Their revolutionary project, titled Rave Digital, has been celebrated by the likes of Vogue, Forbes and LOVE magazine. This is the first fashion course in the world to embark on such a project.

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, Ravensbourne students thought of how best to showcase their work in the absence of a physical degree show. National lockdown meant fashion students temporarily lost access to the machines and equipment needed to create their garments so had to consider alternatives. In a period of just six weeks, our Fashion and Gaming students created 'Rave Digital', a downloadable game that displays fashion designs on 3D digital avatars.

"I am super excited about the show! Having graduated just back in June and already being involved in the prestigious London Fashion Week feels like a huge privilege. I am really thankful to everyone who is making this happen!

When I first started, I knew nothing about fashion and didn’t have any experience in sewing or styling whatsoever, but I had been drawing and sketching for fun since kindergarten.

The fashion course at Ravensbourne and the tutors I met along the way, kept believing in me and pushing me. After three years, I have all the manufacturing, sewing, pattern-cutting, print and design skills that I need to realise my creativity and to keep challenging myself."
