Ravensbourne celebrates black business with Jamii craft fair

Ravensbourne University London has partnered with Jamii to host a craft fair in the Ravensbourne building. The craft fair will celebrate black business and introduce the community to incredible makers from the African diaspora. The craft fair takes place on Friday 29 October 2021, from 11.00am – 2.00pm on the ground floor. You can register your attendance via this form.
Jamii is the home for Black creators and makers; a discovery platform that connects consumers with upcoming British brands. Jamii stocks ‘everyday products and just-because gifts. All delivered with that extra buzz you get from buying Black and British.’ The company also sell a £15 discount card, that allows members to receive discounts of 10% - 40% on all products. Jamii is the Swahili word for ‘community’, perfectly capturing the essence of the site.
Jamii CEO, Khalia Ismain, has created a destination for consumers to save money and support Afro-Caribbean entrepreneurs whilst those brands also gain visibility. Khalia has been featured in the likes of Forbes, the Evening Standard and has appeared on Sky News. Having successfully created a directory of independent Black-owned businesses, Jamii also host a number of pop-up events in places like Boxpark Shoreditch. The products for sale range from mouth-watering Oreo brownies to gorgeous stationary and organic handmade soaps. South London Kitchen sell innovative BBQ sauces, with blueberry, strawberry and mango varieties to choose from. Yeye Mi celebrate self-care with their beautiful headwraps, satin bonnets and empowering art prints. The list of vendors has been carefully curated with our community in mind, featuring affordable, accessible products.

This is the first time that Ravensbourne has had a Black History Month craft fair for staff and students to enjoy. The university will open its doors to the flourishing community on Greenwich peninsula and the wider general public. The fair will close a month of events dedicated to exploring and celebrating the Black British experience.
Ravaé Richardson, Deputy chair of Ravensbourne’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion committee commented, “Organising this event has been a real pleasure. It was so important to plan a celebratory event that our whole community could enjoy. Partnering with a company as refreshing as Jamii has been amazing. Jamii reaffirm that black businesses aren’t just confined to black consumers. If you’re committed to anti-racism, small changes like shopping with a variety of businesses ensure you’re putting your values into action.”
