Three Ravensbourne graduates nominated in global design awards

Publication date:Three Ravensbourne graduates have been shortlisted by industry experts for the Global Design Graduate Show, an awards show that recognises the best end-of-year projects in the world created by art and design students.
The Global Design Graduate Show 2021, in collaboration with Gucci, is a worldwide celebration of the class of 2020/21, and is the second year of the competition. Open to students in any related creative discipline, the shortlist is decided by a panel of independent expert judges brought together by ARTS THREAD.
We are thrilled that our graduates Caitlin Denton, BA (Hons) Fashion Buying and Brand Management, Calum Gambrill, BA (Hons) Product Design and Belle Palmano, Foundation Diploma in Art and Design (Media Production), have been nominated for prizes.
The show has four categories: Fashion/Accessories/Textiles, Digital/Visual Communication/Film, Product/Architecture/Interiors, and Fine Art/Photography/Craft. Winners will be announced on Monday 18 October following a public vote.

His Echo
Caitlin has been nominated in the Fashion/Accessories/Textiles category for her pioneering ‘screenwear’ brand Kateri. In an age where consumers will increasingly buy an outfit, wear it once and not think twice – all for that social media post or big event – Kateri provides a greener solution by offering the latest trends as digital pieces.
Customers buy and download digital outfits that are overlain onto a chosen photograph using augmented reality technology, creating picture-perfect photos without the waste. Kateri is billed as the UK’s first digital fashion house and was previously showcased on the exterior of Flannels flagship London store on Oxford Street for W1 Curates.
Calum is up for the Product/Architecture/Interiors category for Lift, a smart weight training device. This pair of 4kg ‘smart dumbbells’ provide audio and haptic feedback within the grip to provide users with accurate feedback on their technique.
These cues alert people if they are raising or lowering the dumbbell too quickly or too slowly, ensuring they maintain the correct motion and rhythm while exercising. Home exercise boomed during the pandemic, a trend that is expected to grow further even now that lockdown restrictions are easing.
Calum’s innovative ideas are no stranger to awards panels – he previously won the prestigious Ford Design Award for his autonomous taxi concept designed to help people with access requirements.
Belle has been nominated in the Digital/Visual Communication/Film category for her short film ‘His Echo’. This supernatural drama follows Leo, a young adult living in London, who catches up with an old friend. The evening takes an unexpected turn when he is then visited by some other familiar faces.
These three rising stars are certainly ones to watch as they head out into the working world, and we wish them all the best in their future activities.
