Students premiere final-year films at the Curzon Soho

Ravensbourne’s BA (Hons) Digital Film Production students premiered their final-year films during a private screening at the iconic Curzon Cinema in Soho. The student films were followed by an awards ceremony to celebrate their outstanding achievements.

Out of 160 student submissions, 20 outstanding films were chosen to be screened at one of London’s most prestigious cinemas; the Curzon Soho. Students, staff and industry insiders alike gathered to watch a captivating series of dramas, documentaries, horror films and music videos. The screenings provided a unique opportunity for students to see their work on the big screen and contextualise their vision within the industry that they’ll go on to shape.

This was followed by an awards ceremony to celebrate the students’ most notable achievements in their work. The awards were generously sponsored by Final Draft, Sennheiser and CVP & ARRI Creative Space.

Among the winners were Aine Donnelly who won the Best Screenwriter Award for her short film 'Martyr of Mine', a 15 minute period drama set in Northern Ireland in the early ‘70s. The mature and ambitious film can be viewed below:

Talya Stone won the Sound Design Award for the film 'Guitar or Homework' and the Directing Award was won by Marco Augelli for the film 'Backwards', which tells the story of Jack, who in a society where people walk backwards, goes on a journey to overcome his problem of walking forwards.

Marco commented,"Seeing our work on the big screen at such an important cinema was incredibly rewarding. A great opportunity to truly understand the impact of the film in front of an audience, it just wouldn't be as effective elsewhere. I thank everyone involved in the film and Ravensbourne for this amazing directing award. I hope it brings good luck during the festival run."

Carlos Sellmeyer, a third year BA (Hons) Digital Film Production said, “The Ravensbourne final major project screening at the Curzon cinema in Soho was the perfect way to end our three year journey together as filmmakers. My team and I are immensely proud of winning ‘Best Director' and ‘Best Cinematographer' for the short film ‘Backwards', directed by the talented Marco Augelli and produced by Oscar Adams.”
