Ravensbourne University London awarded their own degrees for the very first time at this year’s graduation ceremonies at the iconic Barbican Centre, having been officially granted university title and launching their own curriculum last year.
Ravensbourne hosted two ceremonies to celebrate the achievements of both the Screen School and Design School. The morning ceremony was dedicated to students graduating in courses such as BA (Hons) Animation, BSc (Hons) Digital Television Technology, BA (Hons) Digital Photography and BA (Hons) Music and Sound Design. Dr Gary Pritchard, Executive Dean of the Screen School, presented the candidates with their awards.

Former Chair of the Board of Governors, Jonathan Drori, was presented with an Honorary Fellowship during the ceremony, in recognition of his indispensable leadership over the past six years. Jonathan has had an illustrious career, having been Executive Director for BBC Online and an executive producer on more than 50 primetime shows. He has held board and ambassador roles at organisations such as the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and WWF and has hosted popular TED Talks on botany and plant science.
The second ceremony of the day saw Professor Lawrence Zeegen, Executive Dean of the Design School, present awards to students graduating from courses including MA Architecture, BA (Hons) Advertising and Brand Design, BA (Hons) Fashion and BA (Hons) Graphic Design.
Michael Horsham — an early member of the highly influential design collective Tomato — was honoured with a Visiting Professorship during the ceremony. Michael has been working with Ravensbourne over the last 18 months, contributing to the vision for the Institute of Creativity and Technology, a new initiative to connect academics, researchers and students with industry partners working at the boundary of creativity and technology.
Design writer, curator and consultant, Lynda Relph-Knight was also presented with an Honorary Fellowship. Lynda was editor of Design Week for over 20 years and now works primarily in design and creative education. Lynda sits on the Design School Advisory Board at Ravensbourne and helped deliver the Ravensbourne’s first undergraduate symposium, ‘Futures in the Making.’

Acting Vice-Chancellor, Andy Cook, commented, “It was a tremendous pleasure to be able to host the ceremonies as Acting Vice-Chancellor, especially as this is the first year that Ravensbourne has been able to award their own degrees. We would like to extend our thanks to all the graduands, friends and families who attended and made this graduation such a special event. The incredible achievements, rapturous applause and camaraderie captured what Ravensbourne is essentially all about.”
Emily Cross a BA (Hons) Animation graduate commented, “I was looking forward to this day for quite a while, since we finished in June. Graduation has been really nice, I brought my mum, my dad and my brother. It’s really good for them to be here and support me. Ravensbourne is such an amazing place to study — everyone is so lovely and they want to work with everyone — it’s very collaborative.”
