Graphic Design alumni paint stunning rooftop mural

Kirsty Langston and Brittany Abbott-Trangmar graduated from Ravensbourne’s BA (Hons) Graphic Design course in 2020. In their final year they painted a mural for a café, which inspired them to establish their own mural business, Kirsty & Brittany Design. Their latest artwork is a vibrant celebration of all things Ravensbourne, located on the University’s rooftop.

Having met in primary school, Kirsty and Brittany both studied the BA (Hons) Graphic Design course at Ravensbourne. Following on from some brilliant feedback, they began to explore how they could turn their unique creativity into a career. After some advice from their course leader, the graduates reached out to Ravensbourne’s SEEDS scheme. SEEDS stands for the Self-Employment Entrepreneurship Diversity Scheme. The Ravensbourne scheme gives students industry mentors and the opportunity to attend workshops on establishing a business or freelance career.

In the spring of 2021, Kirsty and Brittany pitched to both the Communications & Media Manager and the Head of Marketing, Communications & Content to see if they could paint a mural in the building. After a few meetings, it was decided that the rooftop would be the best canvas for their bespoke, hand-painted artwork. The exciting mural represents all of the creative courses that are available at Ravensbourne, celebrating Gaming, Fashion, Architecture, programming and Photography to name a few.

Brittany commented, "Pitching was of course very daunting, to be honest, I don't think either of us thought we'd ever paint the mural on the rooftop. We were thinking it would be great pitching practice, even if we weren't successful. But it all went really well; everyone was really supportive of us and the idea just clicked. The final outcome is great and I don't think we could be happier with it. We've had some really amazing feedback and we would love to do some more painting for Ravensbourne in the future!"

Kirsty added, "It was so great to be back at Ravensbourne, and being there to create our own work made it even better! We had a lot of support from everyone who helped make the mural happen, and such a great response from people who came to see it. We can't wait for more staff and students to be able to enjoy the artwork at events and in their own time. We hope it inspires current students and showcases the possibilities that are out there after graduating."

We’re thrilled that the Ravensbourne rooftop has received such a dazzling make-over from our former students. The mural perfectly captures the spirit and energy of Ravensbourne and can be enjoyed for years to come.
