Award-winning film ‘Scrapper’ catapults Ravensbourne alumna’s directing career

Scrapper won the Grand Jury Prize in the ‘World Cinematic Dramatic’ category at the 2023 Sundance awards, one of the influential film festival’s biggest awards. It was released in cinemas last month on 25 August 2023.

The comedy-drama was written and directed by Charlotte, who graduated from BA (Hons) Digital Film Production in 2016, and is her feature debut.

Critics from around the world have praised the film. WeLoveCinema described it as a "masterclass in playful imaginative storytelling" and ScreenDaily said it was "packed full of ideas and fizzing energy".

It follows 12-year-old Georgie, who lives alone in her London flat following the death of her mother. She keeps the social workers at bay by pretending to live with an uncle and makes money stealing bikes.

Her carefully constructed life is disrupted when her father whom she has never met appears out of the blue.

In their review, Empire wrote: "Charlotte Regan's sharp eye and bold vision feels like the work of a filmmaker with decades more experience behind them."

The Guardian said it was a "vital exploration of the father-daughter bond".

It stars newcomer Lola Campbell as Georgie and Harris Dickinson as her father, Jason, who can be recognised from major film releases including ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’, ‘The King’s Man’, and ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’.
