Andrew Ó Murchú BArch, AMLI

Andrew Ó Murchú is a landscape researcher and spatial designer whose work spans across academia and practice. He is a co-founder of BothAnd Group: a research, drawing and spatial design collective that explores the implications of the climate and biodiversity crises, within and for the discipline of architecture. The primary motivation of the practice is in understanding the behaviour of living systems, and in the design of environments that accommodate a more equal status between all forms of life. Their work has been exhibited throughout Europe, most recently at the Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2022. Together with BothAnd Group, Andrew’s research looks at the intersections of politics, ecology, food systems, landscape, and architecture. His writing has appeared in a variety of journals including Landscape Research and Architecture Ireland. 

Prior to joining Ravensbourne University London, Andrew lectured at TU Dublin where he taught across the Bachelor of Architecture programme. He previously worked with architectural practices Gigon/Guyer (SUI), de Blacam and Meagher (IRL), and O’Donnell + Tuomey (IRL) – operating across scales from the urban design of university districts to the planning and delivery of hotels, housing, and exhibitions. Andrew is a regular guest critic across Ireland and the UK and has lectured at many schools of architecture including Cardiff University, University College Dublin, and University College London. He is an academic member of the Landscape Institute (AMLI) and a recipient of the Arts Council of Ireland’s Next Generation Artist Award in Architecture. 

At Ravensbourne University London, Andrew leads and teaches on year two of the undergraduate degrees in the Department of Architecture. His teaching promotes architectural design as a critical reflexive process – to grow an awareness amongst emerging designers of the impact of their decisions on the surfaces and atmospheres of the planet.
