Fashion student works with the likes of Vogue Arabia whilst studying
Second-year BA (Hons) Fashion Promotion student, Jake Williamson, has shared the amazing opportunities he’s had since joining his course. This includes working for the likes of Vogue Arabia and Elle Czech, all before graduating!
Jake shares his thoughts in his own words below.
Studying Fashion Promotion at Ravensbourne has enabled me to meet amazing new contacts and motivational experts in different fields of work. These include photographers, stylists, Fashion writers and many more amazing individuals that have motivated me in my practice.
Ravensbourne University London is the place for career insight. If you’re looking to kickstart your professional practice and meet the best in the industry I strongly recommend this university. Interning under the stylist, art director and brand consultant Emily Evans, has been eye-opening for me. I underestimated the amount of work behind the scenes and the hours that go into pulling off a shoot.
Tutors at Ravensbourne, even in these harder times have been supportive and only a stones-throw away. I have needed guidance a few times and this has always been resolved the same day thanks to the course leaders.
My role under Emily is to assist her with the planning and preparation for shoots. This includes creating mood boards that reflect my creative direction with Emily’s permission and bringing Emily’s concepts to life. Work placements were integrated into my course and are a part of my studies. I was lucky to secure a placement during the Covid-19 pandemic and I owe Ravensbourne my thanks for introducing me to Emily.
In a short time, I have covered Vogue Arabia, Elle Czech and e-commerce styling for Jimmy Choo. I have more magazine publications and many more projects currently in the works. I have styled using brands such as Alexander McQueen, Celine, Balenciaga, Dior and many other prestige brands.
My advice for those that wish to study at Ravensbourne is simple: do it. Honestly do it. I can’t believe how far I have come in such a short time frame. If you want to meet amazing professionals, work on innovative briefs and be pushed to the best of your ability, then Ravensbourne is the university for you. Take everything they give you and apply it to your practice. Interact and follow guest lecturers. Get involved with extra activities and expand your network. That’s how I got my role with Emily. I put in the effort and stayed in contact. Ravensbourne opens the doors for you, but it’s up to you to walk in.
