Amy Davies BA (Hons) Animation graduate

BA (Hons) Animation graduate Amy Davies describes her time at Ravensbourne and remarks how her experiences helped to shape her into the competent professional she is today. Since graduating, she has worked with global names such as Burberry, YouTube and BBC, to name just a few. 

I wanted to study in London and Ravensbourne University London came highly recommended when I was researching for universities. I had been making my own short films since I was 14, but wanted to take it further by being able to incorporate more artistic qualities. Ravensbourne was well known for it's production courses so decided that it would be the place for me.

Now I’m a freelance generalist which includes storyboard work, concept art and 2D traditional animation. I've worked for Golden Wolf, Burberry, You Tube and Made in colour/BBC to name a few.

My journey since graduating has been amazing and I firmly believe that Ravensbourne helped me achieve my goals.

During my degree, I was able to communicate with fellow students, companies and industry professionals which helped me to build a network of useful contacts. Also having exposure to a number of different areas of animation helped me to identify my key strengths and which areas to focus on for my career.

One of the main benefits of studying my course was that it provided me with great networking opportunities. Dan Dalli was a fantastic teacher, and he helped me achieve my targets/goals. He was very supportive of what I did.

As well as this, being a student representative and part of the Degree Show team helped improve my time, people management and my organisational skills - skills I have really utilised since entering the working world.

If you're considering a course at Ravensbourne, make sure you're proactive with every opportunity.

• Go out and meet people (it really is all about who you know to get in the industry)

• Compare yourself directly to your competition, or the people that have the jobs you want. Ask yourself 'Am I that good?', because if you aren't, they won't hire you for that role.

• Be realistic and keep working, the more you work, the more you will improve.

• If you don't give it a try, you'll never know what you can achieve. Take yourself out of your comfort zone and push yourself - it really pays off!
