Concept and creative process
‘Goal’ was an ident from the 1994 Winter campaign for BBC2, which included ‘Bungee’, ‘Cliffhanger’, ‘Meccano’, ‘Op Art’, ‘Slinky’, ‘Ski Jump’, ‘Seeing Stars’, ‘Greenhouse’ and ‘Magnet’. The campaign had no overall theme but many different ideas and each ident was shot differently. 'Goal' was a stop-frame animation shoot on a full-size model set. The '2' slid down the bannister rail and scored a goal in the fireplace by despatching the ball from the top of the newel post. The model '2' was supported by a rig as it moved frame by frame, later painted out in post-production. 'Goal' was used again in 1996 to package football content, when England reached the semi-finals of Euro ‘96. For economy 'Goal' was shot as a companion piece to 'Ski Jump' on the same set.
